Zacky Khairul Umam works on the intellectual and cultural history of the Middle East and Southeast Asia. His scholarly training has included both modern and pre-modern Islamic and Middle Eastern languages and cultures. He pursued formal degrees from Universitas Indonesia, Australian National University, and MA & Dr. phil. from Freie Universität Berlin. His current research revolves around the intellectual history of Islam in the early modern period. He is also interested in cultural changes and/or reconfigurations in maritime Southeast Asia between 1450 and 1800. In addition to his academic work, he is an author in Indonesian language.
